HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF SCOTLAND COUNTY

A Brief History

Habitat for Humanity is a Christian ministry that works to build affordable houses with families in need.   In the fall of 1991, a group of citizens met at the Presbyterian Hut on Church St. to explore the possibility of forming a Habitat organization locally.   Being aware of the success of Habitat in other communities, the decision was made to proceed.

Habitat for Humanity of Scotland County (HFHSC) received its franchise from Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) in the spring of 1992, and proceeded to build its first house during that year.

The City of Laurinburg gave HFHSC building lots on R. Graham and Wagram streets where sub-standard houses had been demolished in the 1970's.   Six Habitat homes where built in this area and one in Gibson between 1992 and 1996.

In 1995 the Habitat Home Store opened its doors at 114 Roper St. as an ongoing fundraiser to benefit HFHSC.   The store became a huge success almost overnight.   Today the store boasts sales of almost $200,000 annually.

In 1996 a local property owner and business man donated 10 plus acres of land located on the eastern edge of Laurinburg.

Following this tremendous land acquisition HFHSC partnered with the City of Laurinburg and received a City Block Grant of $250,000 from HUD in 1997.   This money was used to survey the property, install underground utilities, and to build a street with sidewalks.

This sub-division was appropriately named Providence Place and the street running through it, Covenant Way.   Construction has continued to grow rapidly, and today 25 Habitat homes have been built in Providence Place.   In 2003 the success of Providence Place helped the City of Laurinburg earn the distinction of All America City when it was used as a feature project in the City's bid for the All America City title.

HFHSC is grateful to the many partner families, volunteers, donors, and churches who have contributed so generously over the years.   Together HFHSC and the citizens of Scotland County have built a total of 33 houses for 33 families in need.

Our Mission

Habitat for Humanity of Scotland County works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses, so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which every person can experience God's love and can live and grow into all that God intends.

PURPOSES

The official purposes of Habitat for Humanity of Scotland County are to partner with specific programs in habitat development globally, by constructing modest but adequate housing, and to associate with other organizations functioning with purposes consistent with those of Habitat, as stated in the Articles of Incorporation, to witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world:

  • By working in cooperation with God's people in need to create a better habitat in which to live and work.
  • By working in cooperation with other agencies and groups which have a kindred purpose.
  • By exemplifying the Gospel of Jesus Christ through loving acts and the spoken and written word.
  • By enabling an expanding number of persons from all walks of life to participate in this ministry.

GOAL

The ultimate goal of Habitat for Humanity of Scotland County is to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the face of the earth by constructing and building adequate and basic housing.

Furthermore, all our words and actions are for the ultimate purpose of putting shelter on the hearts and minds of people in such a powerful way that poverty housing and homelessness become socially, politically and religiously unacceptable in our nations and world.
